Vic: Lesbians angry at family court decision
A family court decision giving a gay sperm donor increased access to the son he shareswith a lesbian couple has prompted renewed calls for legal sperm banks to be opened inVictoria.
A verbal access agreement only had been made between the father and the lesbian motherand her partner, none of whom can be named.
After the child's birth the father wanted a day with his toddler every week while themother wanted to limit the visits to two or three times a year.
A family court judge today ordered four-hour fortnightly visits between the fatherand son, who is now two, with contact to increase as the boy grows up.
The father will also be allowed to make decisions concerning his son's welfare and development.
The judge has called for state laws to be changed to reflect the growing number oflesbian and gay families.
Under Victorian legislation, only medically infertile women are able to access sperm banks.
