Fed: PM says he'd like to deliver tax cuts but won't detail plan

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says he'd like to deliver more tax cuts for families --
but he's refused to outline any details, saying that will be done at Budget time.

The Australian newspaper reports more than 40 Liberal and National MPs have worked
on a $1.7 billion plan to ease the tax burden on families rather than high income earners.

Under the plan, the tax-free threshold for families would depend on the number of children
they have.

Mr HOWARD says he'll consider all plans on the table at Budget time, but he's never
favoured giving tax cuts to high-income earners in favour of middle-income earners.

He says the government's family tax benefit already effectively lifts families' tax-free
threshold.
