QLD: Meat processor confirms plans to buy Brisbane abattoir

A family-owned meat processing company in Queensland has confirmed plans to buy the
state-government owned Cannon Hill abattoir.

TREVOR LEE, managing director of Australian Country Choice, says the plan is to convert the
site in Brisbane's south into a $50 million state-of-the-art food production facility for
Coles Supermarket Group.

Mr LEE says the new facility will create 700 jobs in the beef industry and is ideally
located near transport routes.

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says state cabinet approved the takeover on Monday.

The exact terms of the deal remain confidential but the government has handed over the
state-owned land on which the meatworks stood.
