Qld: Bushfires under control around Brisbane
Weary firefighters appear to be winning the battle against Brisbane bushfires despite
gusty, dry winds continuing to fan the flames in at least 15 locations.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Authority spokesman ROB O'CONNOR, says several homes were
threatened in Belclare Street in the western suburb of the The Gap earlier today, but
the blaze is now under control.
Fires are also burning at Kuraby and Gumdale on Brisbane's southside, at Clontarf on
the Redcliffe Peninsula to the north and the northside suburb of Strathpine.
Cool temperatures and cloud cover over south-east Queensland have helped firefighters
gain the upper hand after 400 blazes were reported over the weekend.
Meanwhile, north-westerly winds, gusting around 35 knots, are also fanning major blazes
at Toogoolawah, north of Ipswich and at Kilcoy, north-west of Brisbane.
The weather bureau says the strong westerlies are expected to ease tomorrow but no
significant rain is expected over the next few days.
A total fire ban has been extended for this week.
