Fed: The Xmas-New Year road toll climbs to 37
The national holiday road toll remains steady at 37 .. following two deaths in New
South Wales and Victoria earlier today.
The last death happened in Sydney's west .. when a man died after the car he was driving
smashed into a power pole in Canley Heights about 1.15 this afternoon (AEDT).
The driver had failed to stop for police .. who then followed him for a short time
.. but stopped for safety reasons.
Earlier today a 71-year-old man died after his car veered into a tree in Melbourne's outer north.
The accident happened in Woodstock .. west of Whittlesea .. just after eight this morning.
The Ford Falcon sedan had been travelling south on Merriang Road when it hit a tree
just south of Donnybrook Road.
14 people have been killed on New South Wales roads this Christmas-New Year period.
Nine have died in Victoria .. eight in Queensland .. while two people have been killed
in Western Australia .. Tasmania and South Australia.
